The manuscript reproduced here in facsimile is a partially incomplete redaction of the best-known and most important treatise by Francesco Geminiani (1687–1762), The Art of Playing on the Violin  (1751), and of some parts of A Treatise of Good Taste in the Art of Musick  (1749). Having remained in private hands for two and a half centuries, it was purchased in 2007 by the Luigi Boccherini Study Center in Lucca, where it is still preserved. Initially believed to be an autograph, it was then the subject of new studies which highlighted some inconsistencies which at first led to the belief that it was rather a free transcription perhaps made by a student of Geminiani for his own personal use or a later copy.
